History of Grandpa’s Compounding Pharmacy
In 1982, Bill joined an organization that specialized in compounding. He did this in order to receive more training in this field and gain more ideas and insight on how to better help his patients. He had grown to realize that there are many patients with unique needs that were not being met by the large manufacturers of drugs. Through compounding, Bill found that he was able to help patients that were not being helped before. Bill would work in the community pharmacy by day and stay late to compound prescriptions by night. It was difficult to give this type of service and manage his large family. He decided to open a store and compound full time. Accordingly, he came up with a business plan, and mortgaged his home to finance the venture. A problem was what to call the store. He looked at many possible names, but one of the grandchildren finally suggested calling it “Grandpa’s Pharmacy.” That was the inspiration he needed, and so it is called with a slight change. Since opening the doors on November 4, 1996, Bill has become a local expert in the field of compounding. He has been asked by doctors, other pharmacists and pharmacy students to instruct them in the art and science of compounding. Grandpa’s Compounding Pharmacy has been featured in national and international news broadcasts and Bill has been inducted as a Full Fellow in the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists. His business has grown so much that it has been recognized as one of the 100 Fastest Growing companies in the Sacramento region. As such, he had to move from his original location where it began with just one employee to a newer facility with many employees and room to grow.
